Master Electrician – Substation & Transformer Specialist

The opportunity
We are looking for a highly skilled and experienced Master Electrician with a strong background in substation systems and transformer maintenance, including control cabinet testing — a critical part of preventative maintenance and fault detection. The successful candidate will be responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining substation equipment and will play a key role in ensuring electrical system reliability and compliance.
Key responsibilities:
· Perform diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repairs on power transformers and substation equipment, including control cabinets, circuit breakers, switchgear, and protective relays.
· Conduct comprehensive control cabinet testing as a primary tool for maintenance, including wiring checks, contact testing, relay coordination, and circuit validation.
· Lead and supervise transformer oil testing, vacuum filling, and field commissioning of substation components.
· Read and interpret complex electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and single-line drawings related to both high-voltage systems and control panels.
· Perform insulation resistance tests (Megger), transformer turns ratio (TTR) testing, and power factor testing.
· Coordinate with engineers, utilities, and external contractors on equipment upgrades, replacements, and maintenance plans.
· Maintain clear documentation of inspections, test results, maintenance logs, and any modifications to control systems or wiring.
· Ensure all work complies with electrical codes, regulatory requirements, and strict safety protocols.
· Train apprentices and junior electricians on control cabinet troubleshooting and substation best practices.
Requirements:
· Valid Master Electrician license in.
· 10+ years of hands-on experience in industrial or utility-scale electrical maintenance.
· Minimum 5 years of focused experience on power transformers and substations.
· Extensive experience in control cabinet testing, diagnostics, and fault isolation.
· Deep understanding of substation protection schemes, relay logic, and interlock systems.
· Familiarity with DGA, TTR, IR testing, and other transformer maintenance techniques.
· High proficiency with high-voltage safety procedures, lockout/tagout (LOTO), and PPE requirements.
· Capable of working independently and managing field teams when needed.
Preferred Qualifications:
· Background in utility, renewable energy, or heavy industrial power systems.
· Experience with SCADA systems and remote telemetry.
· Knowledge of NETA/IEEE testing standards.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
· Field work in substations and outdoor environments is required.
· Must be capable of lifting up to 50 lbs and working on ladders, in confined panels, and with PPE.
· May require shift work, emergency callouts, or travel to remote substation sites.
